5:2 Diet Breakfast Recipe: A Fast Day Smoothie

It’s summer (well at least for today) and when the sun is shining I like nothing more than to make myself a refreshing, fruity smoothie to kick off the day. Smoothies are inherently calorific however, it’s the result of all that fructose swimming about just lying in wait to jump up and spike your sugar levels. They're a bit of a GI minefield to be honest. So… not the best option when you’re on a 5:2 Fast Diet day and are planning to wait ‘til supper time before another morsel graces your lips!

This morning I’ve tweaked the classic strawberry, banana and OJ combo to reduce the sugary calories and up its filling potential. I’ll have to let you know how the hunger pangs go today since the proof of the smoothie is clearly in the fasting.

Fruity, Filling, Five Two Smoothie (183 Calories)

Whizz up 100ml orange juice (34), 150g strawberries (45), 50g peeled cucumber (6), 40g Banana (36), 15g oats (59), a dash of lime juice (1) and a couple of sprigs of fresh coriander (2), et voila. A delicious smoothie for only 183 calories.

The important thing with this recipe is to use oats as the main energy source, they are so good for you and the slow energy release ought to keep you going.

Limit the amount of calorific OJ by using ripe and juicy strawberries and also the watery cucumber which adds a wonderfully floral note that compliments the coriander.

One final note, don’t be afraid of the coriander. I know it might sound like an odd addition but herbs work wonderfully with strawberries so you don’t need to limited to mint – although that would be fantastic too. Basil would also complement this concoction really well.

One things for sure, if you can only eat a small amount, it might as well be interesting!
